When you get MitID

Throughout 2021 and 2022 all NemID users must migrate to MitID. The great majority of NemID users will get MitID through their online or mobile banking. You will be notified automatically, when you need to migrate. You will receive a notification as you log on to your online og mobile bank. Since MitID is faced in 2021 and 2022, you should be aware that it might take time before you are asked to migrate.

If you are not  a customer in  a Danish or a Greenlandic bank, you need to get your MitID from MitID.dk.

If you are a NemID user, you will receive  a digital letter from the the Danish Digitization Agency and the MitID partnership. The letter will inform you precisely what you need to do to get MitID. You do not need to do anything until you receive the letter. 

For most people the MitID app will be sufficient. The app functions on most new smartphones. If you are in doubth, whether the MitID app will work on your smartphone, you will find a list of the requirements here. If you don’t use the NemID app today but would like to use the MitID app, you can do so.

Alternatives are available for those who aren’t able to use the MitID app: The MitID code display or the MitID audio code reader. If you don’t find the MitID app suitable, the MitID code display is a good alternative. The MitID autio code reader is designed for individuals with reduced vision. If you work with sensitive data or make use of MitID several times a day, you can buy the MitID chip.

  • Yes, MitID is secure. MitID offers a number of precautionary measures, which enable you to see ongoing transactions, like the transfer of money. In addition, you are able to get notifiied via your MitID app, SMS or E-mail, if, for example, the your app is downloaded on a new device, or if MitID is used from a computer, you haven’t used before.
  • MitID offers strengthened security, making it more difficult to use another persons identity. You are not able to use the code card with MitID. In addition, you can choose to be notified about critical incidents on your MitID app, SMS or by E-mail, if for example the app is downloaded on a new device, or if MitID is used from a computer that you haven’t used before.
  • To avoid fraud, it is important that you are extremely careful handling your MitID. You identify, who you are, when you log on and approve transactions with your MitID, or when you use your MitID as a signature. It is therefore extremely important that you don’t share your PIN-code or your userID with anybody. Also, do not share your MitID app, MitID code display or MitID audio code reader with anybody. Block your MitID app, MitID code display or MitID audio code reader, if you suspect abuse, for example, if you loose your phone or code reader.

The short answer is that some do and some don’t, Over time, NemID has been issued in various ways with the result that some of them do not match the documentation requirements of MitID. This means that some NemID users must update their ID information in NemID, before they can use their NemID to get MitID. If you are in this situation, you have received a letter from the Danish Agency for Digitization by Digital Post. You could also have been notified by your online bank.
